Greg Werner became the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at James Madison
University in 1995 after working as an assistant in the program the previous
three years. He received his Masters degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise
Science from JMU (’94). He became interested in speed, strength and conditioning while earning his Bachelor’s degree in Human Performance with an
emphasis in Exercise Science at
Austin Peay State University (’91). In addition
to directing JMU's strength & conditioning program Coach Werner is the
faculty instructor for the School of Kinesiology's Concepts of Strength &
Conditioning course (KIN 425). Before coming to JMU Werner
coached for one year at the University of The Pacific in Stockton, California,
and was a student assistant at Austin Peay State University for two years.
Outside of the collegiate ranks Coach Werner has instructed several NFL, MLB and
Olympic athletes. In 2006 Coach Werner received the prestigious title of
Master Strength & Conditioning Coach from the Collegiate Strength and
Conditioning Coaches Association and he was nominated by his peers to be a
finalist for the NSCA's College Strength & Conditioning Professional of the Year
Award. In 2005 he received the highest honor from
the National Strength & Conditioning Association and earned the
Coach
Practitioner distinction. In 1999 he was selected the National Strength &
Conditioning Association, Colonial Athletic Association Strength & Conditioning
Professional of the Year, and was nominated for the National Professional of the
year award. Also in 1999, he was selected to be the Strength &
Conditioning specialist for the US National Field Hockey team. Werner
has been active in the National Strength & Conditioning Association for several
years, he served as the Virginia State Director for the maximum term, and has
been an active speaker at the NSCA Sport Specific Training Conference, CSCS
Symposium and several other coaches clinics and camps. In addition to his
coaching and teaching Werner has published over 20 articles in various coaching
journals and magazines, and is the webmaster for this website. Coach Werner is a
National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and
Conditioning Specialist, is Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified through the
Collegiate
Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association, an
American College of Sports Medicine Certified Health/Fitness Instructor, as well as an
International Sports Medicine Association
Certified Sports Nutrition Consultant. Coach Werner is the
President of AthElite Strength & Conditioning services, a training and
consulting business. He and his wife Cyndi have two children, Hans
Christian
(13) and Heidi Faith (11).
Greg Werner

Callye Williams, MBA, SCCC, USAW
Senior Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach
Houston, Texas native Callye Williams joined
the James Madison Strength and Conditioning staff as the senior assistant
strength and conditioning coach this June. Williams comes to Harrisonburg after
six years at Mississippi State University where she competed as an athlete and
served as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. As a four year
starter at second base for the Bulldogs softball team, Williams garnered
Academic-All American Honors, earned a spot on the Southeastern Conference Honor
Roll multiple times, and served on the Conference Good Works Team for her
service within the community. During her time as an athlete, the Bulldogs went
to the conference and regional tournament three out of the four years. Williams
graduated cum laude with a degree in communication during the spring of 2006.
When her playing career ended, Williams
earned the McWhorter Post-Graduate Athletic-Academics Scholarship Award. This
scholarship is awarded to the top female and male athletes at each Southeastern
Conference institution who demonstrate outstanding qualities in the competitive
arena and in the classroom. She pursued her master’s in business administration
and also worked as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach.
During her time as a graduate assistant,
Williams earned her USA Weightlifting Club Coach Certification, which
demonstrates her proficiency in teaching the Olympic lifts. In addition, she
earned her Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification from the Collegiate
Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association during the national convention in
Nashville, Tennessee. During the convention, Williams, was one of three
candidates to earn the John Stuckey Award. This honor is bestowed upon three
candidates who show the highest proficiency in explaining/coaching and defending
their program during the practical exam.
Lee Rowland,
CSCS
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach
Lee is in his second
year as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at James Madison University.
Prior to JMU Coach Rowland was a Strength & Conditioning Assistant in the
Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Minor League Organization for two years. Lee received a
Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Iowa State University.
While at Iowa State Lee had the opportunity to work as a Student Strength &
Conditioning Coach for the Iowa State Football Strength & Conditioning Staff.
In 2006 Lee received his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.


Sudan Ellington
Graduate Student Assistant
Sudan is in his second year working as a Graduate Student
Assistant. Coach Ellington transferred to JMU from Tennessee where he was
a member of the 2002-03 Vols football team. At JMU he played football on
the 2004 I-AA National Championship team and earned his BS in Kinesiology.
Sudan is currently a unit program director at the Harrisonburg Boys & Girls
Club, and he is pursuing his Masters degree at JMU.

Roeder 
Intern/Student
Assistant
Andrew is in his second year as a student assistant coach.
He is a Kinesiology major. Coach Roeder is proud member of the Virginia
Army National Guard, C TROOP 2-183d CAV. He is a Certified Combat
Lifesaver by 3/116th INF 29ID, he was awarded Battalion Soldier of
the Year of 2/183rd CAV. MAR07, The Distinguished Honor Graduate of
126 soldiers
at the Army’s Warrior Leader Course. Class
#101-07. 18JAN07, Earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for combat experience.
OEF 2004-05, The Distinguished Honor Graduate of 220 soldiers at the Army’s
Infantry School. Fort Benning GA. AUG03. Coach Roeder was Deployed in
support of Operation Enduring Freedom conducting both combat and peacekeeping
missions in provinces of Afghanistan.
Andrew completed an internship with Coach Scott Swanson at
West Pointe, Spring 2008.
Rani
English,
Spring 2008 Intern from JMU
Born in Georgetown and
raised in Chester, VA (20 mi. south of Richmond), Rani is a Kinesiology major
with an exercise leadership concentration. She plans on being a Personal
Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, and Strength and Conditioning coach. Rani
will be graduating May 3, 2008 and is excited to pursue whatever opportunities
that come her way in the fitness world!
Tyler Furrie,
Spring 2008 Intern from Youngstown State University
Tyler was born in San Francisco, CA and raised
in Vienna, OH, near Cleveland. He comes from
Youngstown State University with a Major in Human Performance and Exercise
Science and a Minor in Biology.
Tyler was the recipient of the 2008 JMU Strength & Conditioning
Most Outstanding Intern award.
Bryan Buckland, Spring 2008 Intern
from JMU
Bryan is a
Kinesiology, Exercise Science and Leadership major. Enjoys pizza and AC/DC.
Single. Going into the Army after graduation.

Tyree
2nd year working as student assist
Frank is a Kinesiology, Exercise Science and
Leadership major. Former 6th grade teacher and track coach at Benjamin Franklin
Middle School, in Rocky Mount,VA.
Frank is performing an internship
at The Edge Sports Performance center in Roanoke, VA.
Preston
Baez, Spring 2008 practicum student from Bridgewater College
Preston is a senior practicum student at
Bridgewater College, VA. He is a
double major in Allied Health Science and Nutrition and Wellness. With these
degrees Preston is focusing on Strength and Conditioning and Sports Nutrition.
Preston is also a former Bridgewater College Football player, 04-06 seasons.
For the past two summers, '06 & '07 he has completed Internships for

Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach
Ben, a JMU Kinesiology major, began as a student assistant in August 2004,
worked hard and was promoted to Junior Assistant in August 2007.
Ben completed an internship with Coach Tom Moffitt and the National
Champion LSU football team during the summer of 2007. Ben is now pursuing
his Master's degree at LSU where he is working
as one of Coach Moffitt's graduate assistant strength & conditioning
coaches.
Ben was the recipient of the 2008 JMU Strength & Conditioning Most
Outstanding Student Assistant award.

Former Senior Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach
Kevin began as an Assistant in August 2006 and was promoted
up to Senior Assistant in August 2007. He left JMU in April 2008 to move
back to his home of Pheonix, Arizona and peursue a career as a personal strength
& conditioning coach with Lifetime Fitness.

Conditioning Coach at the University of New Mexico.

Conditioning Coach at Christopher Newport University. Mike now works for
the Williamsburg Dept of Recreation as a Strength & Conditioning coach. |

Strength & Speed Coach at D1 Sports in Greenville, SC. Coach Cain is
now working for D1 in Knoxville and back at U.T. as an assistant.

Dave Forman, MS, CSCS, Former Assistant
Dave, served as a Student Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for
three years while completing his BS in Kinesiology. Coach Forman was an integral member of the AthElite
Sports Performance Academy staff ('01 and '02). From JMU Dave moved to Los Angeles where he completed an
internship with the National Champion USC Trojans with Coach Chris Carlisle and
his staff. Coach Forman then went on to complete his Masters degree working
as a graduate assistant strength coach at the University of Mississippi under
Coach Noel Durfey. Dave left Ole Miss and completed an internship with
Notre Dame strength & conditioning during the summer of 2006. Coach
Forman went on to be the assistant at Sacramento State for one year. Dave
is now the assistant football strength & conditioning coach at Stanford.

Wes,

Conditioning Coach for three years while completing his BS in Kinesiology. He left JMU
to fulfill an internship at Stanford for the winter/spring of 2003. Wes
is now a personal training in the San Francisco bay area.

Mike left JMU to become a Graduate Assistant Strength
& Conditioning Coach at the University of Memphis.
He left
Memphis to become an assistant with the Anaheim Angels organization.
Mike is
now an assistant at the University of Minnesota working with Men’s and Women’s
Hockey, Men’s Basketball, Baseball, Track, Swimming, and Golf.

Skylar,

first at the University of Maryland (summer of '02) and then at the University
of Minnesota (Fall '02). Skylar graduated from JMU in May of 2002 with his
BS in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science.

Patrick Borkowski, MS, USAW, CSNC, former Assistant ('98-'01) Pat
left JMU to become a Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at the
University of Mississippi. He completed his Masters in Exercise Physiology
in May 2002, then became a Strength & Conditioning Coordinator
at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Coach Borkowski
was promoted at the USOC and is
now the Strength & Conditioning Coach for all the U.S. National Teams in acrobat
and combat sports.

Associate ('99-'00)
Coach Durfey left JMU to become the Coordinator of Strength &
Conditioning
at the University of Mississippi where he coordinated the entire program and
worked specifically with football and baseball. In the winter of 2008 Noel
left Ole Miss to become the Head Football Strength & Conditioning Coach at Duke
University.

Mike Basgier, MS, CSCS - former Student
Assistant ('99-'00)
After working as a student assistant for
one year Mike left JMU to become a Graduate
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Auburn University.
After completing his MS at Auburn Mike became a Sports Performance Coach for Velocity Sport
Performance in Ashburn, Virginia. Mike left Velocity to get back into
the collegiate field in 2005 when he became an assistant coach at
Indiana University. Coach Basgier works with the men's swimming,
women's swimming, field hockey and women's water polo teams. In addition
to designing, implementing and supervising year-round strength and
conditioning programs for those teams, he assists with football.

career in orthopedic consulting. Matt now lives in the Washington D.C.

Coach Weatherford left JMU to become an
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at The University of Mississippi
(98'-'00). He left Ole Miss to become the Strength & Conditioning
Coordinator at the Arco U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista,
California. He left the U.S. Olympic Committee to become the Strength &
Conditioning Coordinator for the United States Ski Association based out
of Park City, Utah. In the spring of 2007 Zach accepted a position
to go back to work for the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Coach Plisk left JMU to become the
Coordinator of Strength & Conditioning at the US Olympic training
center in Colorado Springs. After leaving Colorado Springs Steve
became the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at the University of
Memphis, and then he moved on to become the Director of Athletic Conditioning
at Yale University. Steve left Yale to become the Director of Sports
Performance for Velocity Sports Performance in Connecticut. He now
owns and operates Excelsior Sports Performance.
