We have recently moved all club communication over to Blackboard.  Utilizing this new system we are able to keep our members up to date with a monthly calendar of events, emails for each group level, handouts to be used at club meetings and information on fundraising efforts.  If you would like to gain access to the JMU Sign Club via Blackboard please email Chesney Grizzard: grizzacj@jmu.edu) or Susan Kruck (kruckse@jmu.edu) for details.

The Sign Language Club is relatively new here at JMU. We began meeting unofficially in Spring of 2001 and got our official recognition the following year. Our purpose is to increase awareness of American Sign Language and Deaf culture here at JMU. Members range anywhere from complete beginners to members of the Deaf community who use ASL as their primary language. Everyone is welcome and everyone has something to gain by coming to meetings. Hope to see you there!

Goals:
  • To provide educational programs for the general public on the issues concerning the Deaf community and Deaf culture.

  • To provide educational workshops organized so that novice and advanced signers, interpreters and members of the Deaf community will be in a comfortable atmosphere to interact, learn, and practice their language skills.

  • To sponsor Silent Suppers (new pictures posted 2/04) and other Silent Activities. These events provide a social atmosphere where the Hearing and Deaf communities can interact and learn from one another.

  • To provide a forum for interpreters and interpreters in training to interact with the Deaf community and practice their interpreting skills.
