

Derby Days is a week long social and philanthropic event in order to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. Children's Miracle Network-the alliance of premier hospitals for children-is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids by raising funds for 170 children's hospitals across North America. Each year these non-profit hospitals provide the finest care, research and community outreach to help millions of children with diseases and injuries of every kind.
Derby Days is one of the most recognizable events in JMU greek life. The concept of derby days is based around competition between sororities in order to raise money for the cause of the Children's Miracle Network. The week consists of such events as coach's intro, dance competition, penny wars, soccer, community service day, house decoration, etc. The week kicks off at midnight on the Monday that the week begins and ends on Saturday night at the Derby Days Basement party where the winners our announced. The 2004 winner of Derby Days was Sigma Kappa, whom has one 7 out of the last 8 years, although all sororities are competitive and help raise money for this great cause. This year Sigma Chi, with the help of Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha, was able to raise over $1,200 dollars for the Children's Miracle Network. The goal for next year will be to raise $2,000 dollars for the Children's Miracle Network.
