Morning, Freethinkers!
The party on Friday was a complete success in my opinion. Everyone who came seemed to have fun. We will definitely have to have another one before the semester is over :).

For this week, I'm thinking we can all talk about politics. We're at a peak in the news/media discussions about the candidates, and I think it would be neat to see who thinks which candidates would be best fit to run the country. Plus, discussion may very well help indecisive members come to support certain candidates. So for this week, come ready to discuss: Which candidate do you support? Why? Who do you think has a higher chance of winning? Which candidate scares the living daylights out of you? Come prepared to either talk about your pick, or with questions about certain candidates. I doubt this conversation will get boring ;). Meeting is at 7:30 Weds in the APL with officers meeting at 7:15 for bidness.

See you all Wednesday!

Hiya Freethinkers!
Man, after that 3-day weekend, I'm thinking they should make it the standard from now on :). Hope everyone had a pleasant extended weekend.

I have been informed that there will be a visiting scholars lecture on Tuesday that pertains to us! Dr. Michael Ruse will present a lecture on the topic: "Can a Scientist Be a Christian?" It's this Tuesday, Jan 22 at 7:00pm, in the Health and Human Services Building room 2301. This isn't a mandatory lecture to attend, just an option for you all. I'm definitely gonna try and be there!

For this week's topic, I was thinking mayhaps we could discuss this very question. Also, is it possible for a scientist to be Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, etc.? Why or why not? I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on this. The meeting will be at 7:30 in the APL this Wednesday as usual, with officers meeting at 7 for bidness.

Tootles!

Hey all!
This week's meeting will be the first after Student Org Night (which is tonight). We might have some new members show up, and will allocate some time to get to know them and tell 'em what we're all about. With potential new members arriving, I think astrology would be a fun topic to discuss. How valid is astrology? Is there any significance in tarot card, palm, or psychic readings? Come with an open mind, and maybe even check your horoscope at the end of the days this week...just for fun ;). We will meet at 7:30 Wednesday in the APL, as usual. Officers meet at 7 to discuss bid'ness.

Have a fantabulous week!

Greetings, Freethinkers! As you all know, our meeting next Wednesday happens to fall on Halloween! That being the case, I can't think of a better topic than DEATH (insert evil laugh here). Is it right to kill someone (captial punishment)? Is it right to put an end to a consenting adult's misery (euthanasia)? This will be an interesting discussion since we may have different opinions on the matter. The meeting will be at 7:30 in the APL, as usual, with officers meeting at 7 for business. Oh, and seeing as how it's Halloween, feel free to dress up! I know I will :).

See you all Wednesday!

Thanks
Thank you to Dr. Cavalcanti and everyone who turned up for presentation last week! I think it went very well - he was pleased to be invited to our group :). I am in the process of contacting another JMU faculty member to come and speak to us about holistic and alternative medicine. So far she seems interested!

The topic for this week will be War: why do humans go to war, what are the reasons/justifications for it, and is it morally right? I got the idea from the University of Iowa's Freethinker website. Random, I know, but I want to cite my sources! The meeting will be Wednesday at 7:30 in the APL, as always, with the officers meeting at 7:00 to discuss business. Not too much business this time around, just a few updates.

Hope to see you all there!

Hello Freethinkers! This Wednesday's meeting is going to be very special! I've arranged for Dr. Cavalcanti (Dept. Head of JMU Sociology and Anthropology) to come speak to us. He will give us a short presentation which will then be followed by a Q&A session/discussion. The topic he will be lecturing on is "Secularization: how society is relying less on supernatural explanations for how to reach a good life." As with other meetings, the presentation will begin at 7:30pm in the Airport Lounge. Officers and Dr. C should arrive at 7 for business and to prepare for the lecture.

I'm hoping for a good turnout from Freethinkers. Bring friends if you can! :D I will try and get in contact with JMU's sociology and anthropology groups and see if they wish to attend. See you all Wednesday!

P.S. I am working on getting a room and date for the movie "The God Who Wasn't There". I'll keep you all posted :).

Good Morning, Freethinkers! Alrighty, first some news. The movie "The God Who Wasn't There" arrived this weekend, so I have it! I will make sure it works before next week ;). I have put in a request for us to have the Transitions room on 9/26 for 7:30pm, and the Student Org Center said they'd send a confirmation shortly. Looks like we're a go for the movie night next week! I'll keep you all updated as events unfold.

Our meeting this week will be Wednesday in the APL (Airport Lounge) on the 4th floor of Warren, as usual, at 7:30pm. Business will be conducted at 7, and we'll hope to discuss and finalize our t-shirt designs and plan to get them made asap. (FYI, the logo we've decided on is "Put A Leash On Your Dogma"). The topic this week was suggested by Peter: Christian Nation - America's Past? Present? Future? Let's explore the true "religious origins" of America, and hear people's ideas of whether America is presently or will be considered Christian.

Hope to see you all there!

Greetings, fellow Freethinkers!
I can't tell you all how happy it made me to see so many new people at our meeting last Wednesday! It gives me hope to know that there are so many intelligent, open minded students on campus :).
Our meeting this Wednesday will be held at 7:30 at our usual meeting place, which is the Airport Lounge on the fourth floor of Warren Hall . REMEMBER - this means all our future meetings will take place here unless stated otherwise. Business for officers will be at 7, as usual, though all are welcome! The topic this week is, "What is religion?". Perhaps we can define our terms of atheism and agnosticism by getting through the semantics of what is and is not considered religion.
If anyone has any questions, please shoot Freethinkers an email. See you all Wednesday!

Hey all you new people that we got to meet at SON.
Our meeting will be tonight at 7:30pm in the Post Office of Warren instead of the Airport Lounge. This will only be the case for tonight and we will resume meeting in the airport lounge next wednesday. Our topic tonight will be Evangelical Fanaticism: Is it okay to try and convert people. We will have our poster board from student org night out so that you know you are in the right place. Hope to see you all there. (^_^)
Business will be at 7pm and will consist of greeting new people and socializing. So try to be there on time so that the new peoples can get to know the officers and returning members.

ALUMNI!!!!!!
I am going to create an alumni email group so that people do not get spammed with information that really does not pertain to them. The only emails that will be sent to this group include events, alumni, and other things deemed worthy. They will not contain weekly emails and things that only pertain to people in the immediate area. Let me know if you would like to be put on this list instead of the mass list. If you would like to continue getting weekly emails, let me know so I can have you on that list as well.

School is almost back in session and we will be having a meeting on Wednesday, August 29th. Business will begin at 7pm where we will be discussing the upcoming semester and student organization night. We will begin the discussion whenever we get tired of business (^_^). Our discussion will be about Secular Parenting: Raising children Without Religion. This topic is based off of the idea of how should a non-theist or non-mainstream religious person raise their child. Should they teach their kid to only believe what the parent believes, or should they not lead the child to any school of thought and let them decide for them self. Many schools of thought in this area, and as a person who would like to have kids some day often thinks about. Come discuss your ideas or if you havn't thought of this before, see what others feel.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION NIGHT!!!
Time to get some new wee little freshman to come and get their minds corrupted (^_^). SON is being held on September 4th from 5pm-8pm with set up half an hour before and clean up for half an hour after. Officers will need to make themselves available to help out and other members are encouraged to come out as well. We will work on our poster board a little at business on the first meeting and then more on a date set at that time. See you all there.

FINALLY, AN UPDATE!
CNN is currently having an interesting TV mini-series going on called God's Warriors which talks about evangelicals in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. It has lots of video clips from the show that are eye opening. Check it out online at http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/gods.warriors/index.html
