Within JMU’s degree offerings, there are several unique components of the flute program. One of the most significant is the JMU Flute Club. Members of the JMU Flute Club are JMU flute majors, other JMU music majors (in other instruments, such as saxophone), and non-music-majors who have maintained an interest in flute playing into college, without pursuing it as a major. Officers are elected annually by the membership. The organization is self-supporting, as it receives no financial support from the university or School of Music, and its activities are for the sole purpose of supporting JMU’s flute studio and flute choir. These activities have included several fundraisers throughout each academic year, such as concert ushering, car washes, bake sales, university sports facility clean-up, and holiday/special events performers for-hire. The JMU Flute Club hosts a variety of events throughout the academic year, but the primary event in the Club’s annual calendar is the hosting of FLUTE FLING!, held each spring. This featured activity is a fun and informative day-long event of workshops, masterclasses, and concerts for middle school and high school students, private and ensemble teachers, and flute aficionados. The most innovative aspect of FLUTE FLING! is that the student members of the JMU Flute Club design and present all of the workshops and most of the concerts themselves, with additional masterclasses and performances by Dr. Chandler. In addition to Flute Club activities, members of the JMU flute studio are active in the community as performers and private teachers, and they frequently participate in competitions, and summer masterclasses and festivals throughout the world.
